Riello UPS : Supporting critical power infrastructure in new London Hotel
Project Description
The demolition of the existing office building at Creed Court with part façade retention and the construction of a 145 bedroom 4-star Curio by Hilton Hotel.
Consisting of several basement levels and 6-storey building above ground. The hotel will include a bar & restaurant as well as a barista café at ground floor, gym facilities and internal courtyard landscaping benefiting both the hotel itself and the neighbouring properties.
The works include excavation of double level basement, using a combination of the existing basement retaining walls and additional temporary works whilst working around the façade retention support structures. The 6-storey concrete frame above ground will have a façade consisting of precast brick & stone panels, curtain walling & mansard roofs blending into existing retained façade.
The Site
The site is located primarily facing Ludgate Hill – the main thoroughfare leading up to St. Paul’s Cathedral and also surrounded by Creed Lane and Ludgate Square which have narrow one-way streets. This is a very busy business and tourist area just 150m from St. Pauls Cathedral. The existing building abuts an apartment block on two elevations and the new building will follow the same footprint and similar massing. The area is at the heart of the ancient City of London and home to a host of attractions, not least the world-famous cathedral itself, as well as the headquarters of a range of organisations from the Financial Times to the London Stock Exchange.
Design Story
The design and part façade retention of the existing building is significantly important due to the site’s prominent location within the heart the conservation area of St Paul’s and with business and residential properties abutting the site footprint. With commanding views to St Paul’s Cathedral opposite, the 145 guest room hotel will be a stunning arrival to the London market when it opens at 3 Ludgate Hill in 2022. The Grade II listed façade is undergoing extensive refurbishment to preserve its architectural heritage.
